I have a question: How are you preparing for Back-to-School Night? Do you send a letter home ahead of time? Do you have students prepare projects to display? Do you give a more formal presentation or just chat with parents one-on-one? Share your plans and preparations here!

I'll answer my own question. I taught sixth grade, so my preparations were a little different, since I had kids who were young enough to do art projects for their parents and still stayed in my room for the full day. I would make sure there was plenty of student work on the walls to make the classroom feel welcoming. For the parents, I prepared a PowerPoint presentation of what our day was like, along with a summary of what we'd cover in each academic subject over the course of the year. So that parents could find their students' desks, I would have the kids make, in art class, tracings of their bodies which they could then decorate and we would seat in their chairs. Finally, I always left out paper and pencils so the parents could leave notes for their children--that was always my favorite part of Back-to-School Night when I was a kid, finding the note from my parents!
