What are your thoughts on interventions for older struggling readers? Have you had any success with another approach?

It's hard because a lot of beginning reader books are aimed at younger kids. With older struggling readers, I would try to emphasize motivation. For example, many high schoolers are interested in earning a driver's license, so reading the prep materials and practicing taking the written test can be quite motivating. Same thing with preparing for applying for a job by filling out applications, reading online job postings, etc. A resource for online books, such as bookbuilder.cast.org/model.php, can also be quite motivating.
