I do think many of the problems facing our students stem from their home lives, that they aren't the school's fault, but it's also not as simple as the author makes it. It's not that parents have "waved the white flag," and there are plenty of parents who care but don't know how to support their children, or simply have too much to worry about themselves--affording rent, holding down jobs, caring for aging parents, etc. American children grow up to be American adults, they become the mom and dad, so it's strange to me the author acts like they came out of nowhere with their bad intents. The cycle must be broken somewhere, so where? And how? Why not school, because that is where kids are away from their parents?
