Another teacher wrote: I'm looking for a good consequence that is immediate and in-class. Most of my consequences usually involve lunch detention or going to another classroom, so they miss class.

I like this response: • Ideally, the best would be a time-out, because they're still in class, and it can be implemented immediately, but I don't have any place in my room that would allow an effective time out and perhaps more importantly, I believe 8th graders would chafe against getting a time out at their age.
Also suggested were: o a token system o Whole Brain Teaching? The Scoreboard technique o a reflection journal or a think sheet that students fill out o At the beginning of each 9 weeks he gave us 4 passes- out of homework, to the library and 2 bathroom passes. We could use them whenever, but we never got another one. If we lost them, that was that. And if by the end of the 9 weeks we still had them, we could turn them in for extra points onto our final grade. He could also take them away as punishment.
