Here's a seasonal question: how are you handling Columbus day at school? Do you have special lessons prepared to talk about it? Do you ignore it? How do you handle it sensitively, in light of the different cultures and races in your classroom?

This is a very tricky issue. We would always do related lessons in English, the first class of the day. Usually I would choose a few activities from edhelper--do you all know that site? They have themed units on pretty much anything you could imagine. So, we would read a story, answer comprehension questions, then get to some more fun stuff like word puzzles and coloring pictures. I would also invite students to share their stories and opinions. I would love to hear how others handled it!
